As it turns out, summer is not the time to let your guard down on the roads in the desert, regardless of the slow-down in traffic. Despite what many people think of as the most dangerous time to drive, after a snow-storm or on icy roads, August is the most dangerous month for traffic accidents according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Speed and driving without a seatbelt both contributed to a young man's death on Tuesday in Cabazon. A 19 year-old man from Los Angeles named Nicholas White was allegedly driving at speeds over 100 MPH on Seminole Road near the Desert Hills Outlet Mall when he failed to slow down for the traffic circle and struck the median. White was ejected from the green BMW and died at the scene.
A 26-year-old man was sentenced on July 10 in connection with a DUI accident in which his blood alcohol content registered between .10 and .18 percent, well over the legal limit. The accident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on January 10, 2014. Five passengers rode with the man as they reportedly drank at the home of one of the individuals, later traveling to two bars and a grocery store as they continued to consume alcohol throughout the evening.
